The Nigeria Smartphone and Application Penetration Study was launched in 2019 to understand how Nigerians interact with smartphones and digital services in an increasingly technology-driven economy. The first edition of the study was conducted exclusively in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, providing early insights into smartphone ownership and digital application usage among urban consumers.
Recognising the rapid evolution of Nigeria’s digital landscape, the study was expanded in 2023 to cover multiple cities nationwide. The 2025 report represents the third instalment of the study, offering deeper insights into smartphone penetration, mobile ecosystems, and digital behaviour across key Nigerian cities. Nigeria continues to experience rapid digital transformation driven by a young population, improving internet connectivity, and growing
smartphone affordability.
Industry estimates suggest that smartphone adoption in Nigeria is expanding steadily, with penetration levels expected to reach significant milestones as mobile devices increasingly become the primary gateway to digital services. This shift has created a thriving ecosystem of digital
applications spanning financial services, social media, entertainment, commerce, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency platforms.
The insights presented in this report provide valuable intelligence for businesses, investors, policymakers, and technology developers seeking to understand Nigeria’s digital economy. By examining smartphone ownership patterns and the adoption of key digital applications across different sectors, the study highlights emerging opportunities within Nigeria’s growing mobile economy. The findings are particularly relevant for organisations seeking to design consumer-centric digital products, expand digital service offerings, and invest strategically in Nigeria’s rapidly evolving technology ecosystem.
